This seminar introduces methods for developing autonomous, interactive systems that act as a hybrid of digital and material intelligence. The working methodology will center around the creation of iterative prototypes and experiments that examine the material and spatial potentials of sensing and actuating systems.
The first phase of development will focus on creating a series of Material Animations. These animations will be achieved by designing composite material systems which can be animated through various types of actuators. In this phase the research will focus on developing the inherent intelligence of a material and augmenting it through digital means of actuation. In the second part of the course each team will expand 1 or more of their material experiments into an autonomous site specific installation on the UK campus. During this phase we will examine various sensing technologies as a link to the material animations.
